After almost a whole year of construction, Steven has started to do appointments at Birds of a Feather, our new salon in Bountiful. He will be there Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Joining us at Birds of a Feather today are Chelsey Taylor, Brittany Evans, and Molly Hyer Bromley. Chelsey has been at Dry Spell since 2019, and will continue to do appointments there on Fridays. Brittany was at greenspace with us for 7 years, and we’re thrilled to have a place in Bountiful for her to rejoin us. Molly has been at Seiren Salon in Sugar House, but like Brittany, she lives in Bountiful and will now be much closer to home. Long-time clients of Steven may remember that Molly worked with him at Dexterity many years ago. Welcome and welcome back to all of our stylists in Bountiful!

This is the final month of greenspace at Artspace! Pearl will be taking over the lease and starting a barbershop there. We’re going to miss working with Pearl, but we can’t wait to see what she does with Suite A-109.

As for the other stylists who have been at greenspace:

  • Steven will be at Dry Spell on Mondays and Tuesdays. He’ll be at Birds Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

  • Nick is staying at greenspace through January, but he will be at Dry Spell starting in February, on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

We have spaces available for rent at Birds of a Feather. Full-time booth rent for hairstylists and treatment rooms are ready to rent now. We have wet and dry treatment rooms that can be used for esthetics, injections, tattoos, piercing, lash extensions, etc. (However, we aren’t ventilated for nails.)

We hope you all had a great holiday season! Happy new year, and thank you for supporting our salons!

What Can You Do About Hair Loss?

July 6, 2023 Steven Petersen

An AI image of a man who has experienced hair loss

Once you start losing your hair, it can feel overwhelming to know what to do. Many products claim to help prevent or even reverse balding, but only your dermatologist has the best options for men and women dealing with hair loss. We got a list of recommendations from our dermatologist, so we could share them with everyone.

Diet Changes

Before going to the dermatologist, you can make a few nutritional changes that could help with hair loss. First, increase your intake of foods that are rich in iron. This includes spinach, lentils, dark chocolate, broccoli, tofu, and beef. Second, make sure you’re getting enough protein. How much protein is enough? Aim for 0.36 grams of protein for each pound you weigh.

Lab Evaluations

Your doctor can order tests to see if your blood has any deficiencies. Ask for lab tests that check CBC, ferritin, ANA, TSH, zinc, vitamin B12, and vitamin D.

Oral Over-the-Counter Options

Hair loss prevention options from your dermatologist may start with over-the-counter supplements. Hair loss can be a sign of vitamin D deficiency, so a daily Vitamin D 1000 IU supplement can be an easy place to start. To help your body absorb the iron you’ve added to your diet, your doctor may recommend a daily vitamin B12 1000 mcg, particularly methylcobalamin, which is better absorbed. A slow release iron 325 mg daily may also be needed; remember to take iron supplements with a glass of orange juice, so the vitamin C can help you absorb it. Always consult your doctor before starting any new vitamin or supplement.

Topical Treatments

Men’s hair loss can be treated with an over-the-counter Rogaine 5% foam or solution. It’s applied once daily and stimulates new hair growth, however you may notice temporary initial shedding as new hairs are growing in. To prevent a sticky feeling, apply the liquid or foam to damp, towel-dried hair and comb it through. Prescription topical treatments include a ketoconazole 2% shampoo to use daily or a compounded finasteride solution.

Oral Prescriptions

Some powerful treatments are available by prescription only. Women have the option of spironolactone if your doctor determines that your hair loss is due to androgenic alopecia. Other oral prescriptions for hair loss include finasteride and dutasteride. Be sure to talk with your doctor about possible side effects.

Elective Procedures

Your dermatologist also may suggest elective procedures that they will perform in their office. One is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, where the patient’s own blood serum is re-injected into the scalp. This is an ongoing procedure that will need to be repeated to maintain results. Another common procedure is hair transplants, where hair is removed from another part of the scalp, usually the back, and redistributed to the area of hair loss. Both of these procedures are more expensive than other options, but you may want to have a conversation with your doctor to find out more information.

Exciting Changes in 2021

January 11, 2021 Steven Petersen

We’re rewriting our (hair) story to include new people and new opportunities in 2021

Dear friends,

2020 is behind us, and while I am certainly ready to move forward into this new year, I would like to first thank you for being there with us, and for trusting us to provide exceptional service, care, and safety when you visit our salons. Supporting us in 2020 through visits and contributions has been a lifeline when there has been so much uncertainty. I have always valued the close and personal nature of hairdressing, but this past year has shown the depth of those relationships unlike any year prior. Thank you.

We will continue to maintain our high standards for COVID-19 prevention in our salons, including regular disinfecting of surfaces, requiring face masks for stylists and clients, limiting the number of people in the salon, running air purifiers, and consistently hand washing and sanitizing. We value the health of our guests and stylists, and we thank you for your support.

Sincerely, Steven Petersen

  • Greenspace is preparing to welcome Eliza Penick, a master esthetician and lash artist who will offer lash extensions, lash perming, brow and lash tinting as well as brow shaping and some wax services. You’ll soon be able to make appointments with her on the greenspace booking site.

  • After five years at greenspace, Whitney Kaufman is moving over to Dry Spell full time. Whitney is an exceptionally talented hairdresser with a particular skill for long, glamorous hair, accented with either subtly natural or striking creative color. Her increased availability will help her accommodate new clients as more people are discovering her skills.

  • Steven Petersen is returning to greenspace full time. As the owner of Dry Spell and greenspace, Steven is tasked with balancing his own clientele, maintaining the salons, and facilitating the needs of the stylists at both salons. A move to greenspace will help him refresh and refine the space there, as well as create space for Whitney to be full-time at Dry Spell.

  • Brittany Evans and Pearl Laterza will continue to take appointments at greenspace.

  • Stevie Bowns and Chelsey Taylor will continue to take appointments at Dry Spell.

If you have an existing appointment with either Steven or Whitney, you will be getting email and/or text messages saying that your appointments have been cancelled at their original location. Do not worry; you will immediately receive notice that a new appointment has been created at the new location. The date and time of your appointment will be the same unless your stylist has made arrangements with you.

Through these changes and additions, we will try to communicate with you to the best of our ability.

Dry Spell & greenspace Reopening -- with Caution

April 28, 2020 Steven Petersen
Exterior view of Dry Spell, a salon in Salt Lake City, Utah

Dry Spell has been closed since the end of March due to COVID-19 but is opening on May 1st, 2020.

Today we are announcing that, with utmost caution, we are reopening our salons on May 1, 2020.

We want our clients to know that we will abide by all guidelines set by our local and state governments, and we have agreed on measures to minimize the risk of visiting our salons. Increased safety measures will include:

  • More distance between clients

  • Face masks for service providers

  • Increased service times to accommodate extra cleaning between clients

  • Staggered scheduling to reduce the amount of people in the salon at any given time (generally two stylists and two clients maximum)

To protect you and our stylists:

  • If you are experiencing a fever, cough, body aches, or any other flu-like symptoms, we insist that you call/text and reschedule your appointment. There will be no cancellation fees.

  • We will require that you wear a mask that will facilitate hair services; most masks that secure with elastic around the ears will be fine.

  • Please wash your hands or use hand sanitizer upon arrival.

  • Services are by appointment only and only clients receiving services are allowed in the salon. We can’t allow guests or children at this time.

  • When you arrive for your appointment, please stay in your car and text your stylist. They will let you know when it’s your turn to come inside.

Our salon is open as of May 1st, however, the stylists are independent businesses and will choose for themselves when they would like to begin working. Chelsey will be seeing clients on May 1st, but Steven won’t be seeing clients until May 16th. Please check their individual schedules to find availability. We look forward to seeing you!
